Last 2009, my mom decided to join me to a cultural exchange program in my school. Since I am an HRM student, this will be a big help for my career in the future. The cultural exchange program will let you have your OJT in the USA and work with the students from different countries also. So everything was set, passport, luggages and all. So my flight is bound to Las Vegas Nevada and from there someone from my host company will pick me up going to Zion Mountain Resort which is the company where I supposed to have my OJT. On my arrival, I was trying to call the host company to inform them that I was already in the airport and they can pick me up. Unluckily, my contact person was no longer connected to the company and did not even endorse me to anyone. So they were very shocked to know a student arrived from the Philippines. With this, no one picked me up at the airport. The next day, i called them again to follow up. After 2hours, atlast! Someone came to pick me up. When i arrived at Zion Mountain Resort, so I was asking the guy in the front office regarding my status, knowing no one endorsed me. He was very irritated and feels like he doesn’t want to talk to me. Another day passed, still no one advises me what to do. So I called my uncle from California, he advised me to fly to California. Now, i decided to just go back to the Philippines. Since my family in California will be flying back to the Philippines in a week. However, my Auntie in Pleasanton, my mom’s cousin, invited me to their place. It was my first time to meet her. She was my mom’s bestfriend back in college. So her husband, Uncle Rich, told me that he can go with me to look for a job. He will drove me to the SSS to have my SS number so I can work legally. After that, he had brought me to the nearest mall in the area, he let me apply in Victoria’s Secret, The Cheesecake Factory, Panda Express. Then we went to TGI Fridays and Mcdonalds which is near their house. He told me to apply in all these stores. And so I did. Then I got interviewed also. Fortunately, I got a call from the Cheesecake Factory, Victoria’s Secret, TGI Fridays and McDonalds. they all told me that I got hired! Yes!!! No its hard for me to decide what to choose. Since TGI Fridays and McDonalds are both near my Auntie’s house, so I decided to pick the two. I work in Mcdonalds at 6 in the morning while at 5pm, I work in TGI Fridays. I worked there in 3 months. These 2 was my first job. I have learned a lot with these experiences. I learned how to handle money. I learned how to deal with different people with different nationality and culture. I learned to value my job since it is not that easy to apply and get a job. I also learned that experiencing something bad does not mean you have to give up. It only says that you have to strive more. Sacrificing and working hard will lead you to a better place. So keep working hard. Do not give up! If you do not get it at first you just have to keep on going! Fight!!
