The Benefits of Exercise

The quarantine has pushed us to stay at home and change our routine. From the usual busy meetings, downtown trips, and barely staying at home, most of us are now confined in the safety of our own sanctuary. As our routine changed, a lot of us have revisited our lifestyle choices such as the food we eat, the time we allocate for sleep, and our fitness routine. With the exploration of our newfound hobbies, we are also finding new ways on how to stay physically fit while staying at home.

Putting exercise on the list of our priorities is one of the best decisions we would make as aim to make our bodies stronger. Taking care of our health does not only require our focus on a certain area but requires us to check upon our holistic health. While exercise may appear as a physical activity, it sure does wonders not only for our physical health but for our mental health too. As we move our limbs and flex our muscles, our body parts are thanking us for committing to having a strong body.

Having a strong body leads us to live a healthier and stronger life, and exercise is a contributor in making sure we live our lives to the fullest. Diseases around us threaten our health which in turn threatens our goals for the future. However, exercise is proven to combat diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. An exercise a day does not only help those who aim to save themselves from acquiring heart diseases but also those who are facing it but are determined to survive from it. (Harvard Health)

Not only does exercise prevent the probabilities of having a heart disease but it also reduces the risk of cancer. It’s not new to us that cancer is one of the deadly non-communicable diseases that affect people of all ages- from toddlers to seniors. Aside from cancer, exercise also addresses other non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. With exercise, our physical bodies become renewed as further strengthen our commitment to make it a part of our daily routine. (Harvard Health)

Exercise does not only promise us a physical paradise but also offers aid in our mental well-being. Science has proven that whenever we exercise, the body reduces the levels of our stress hormones. As our stress levels go down, our mood also enhances as exercise encourages the production of natural chemicals that elevate our mood. With a healthy mind, we can handle stress better which helps us face daily challenges and helps us think clearly. (Harvard Health)

One might think that exercise’s benefits only includes those that are related to health but exercise also teaches a person’s principles that can be applied even in other aspects of life. Discipline is an important skill that one must learn in order to become the best version of himself. The promises of exercise are not acquired through short cuts. It takes discipline paired with a determined mind to endure the challenging road and achieve the goals. While exercise may not be a race, it is a challenge we all have to take and conquer.

When we build the foundation of discipline as we fully embrace the importance of exercise, we feel good about ourselves. We see the slow but sure results of discipline and we become more confident with ourselves because of the continuous development of our body image and the strengthening of our character. We realize exercise is a friend and not a foe. Now, we slowly get up from our couches, open the windows, let the air in, turn on the music, prepare our equipment, and get our bodies moving. The best time to be physically fit and healthy is not tomorrow but NOW.
