Discussions inside a classroom, office, impromptu speeches, interview, any discussion in general can be nerve-racking and stressful at the same time. Especially, if you are unprepared. Well, there are a lot of ways on how can we practice our communication skills any time, anywhere.
We can record ourselves while reading or speaking so that we can hear how we sound and see our posture and gestures. We can also watch a lot of videos that teaches techniques in delivering a speech in a more excellent way. But, these are just short-term solutions. Either we may forget what we have watched when you are in the actual situation of speaking or we have to record ourselves every time we need to, And, who have time for that? None.
An easier way and more effective to give an impromptu speech or if you are caught in an unplanned discussion is through the "PREP Framework".
What is the PREP Framework?
First, "PREP" stands for Point, Reason, Example, Point.
*Point - What you believe in? Here, state your case, main point, or claim. In a short speech, it's better to state just one point so you won't lose your audience. To practice for longer speeches, use a series of PREPs to make different points and support them.
*Reason - What makes it your point? Give reasons that explain your point. Adding information from researches, statistics, and data will add credibility to your claim.
*Example - Give examples. This further supports your claim and reason. It's better to give personal and powerful pertinent stories. (Testimonies may be used too)
*Point - Conclusion. Conclude by showing how your position is right in any aspects. This helps your audience remember it.
Example #1:
Why do you choose teaching as a profession?
I chose teaching as a profession for (P) I love teaching to creative minds. (R) Because, I believe that the individuals are soon to be the leaders and problem solvers of the nation. (E) As how I see these people, they are participative in issues concerning the common good, (P) thus, I'll do my best to educate them realistically.
PREP can be used in casual conversations too.
Example #2:
Where do you wanna go this summer?
This summer, (P) I wanna go to our province, Camarines Sur. (R) Because the last time I went there was 3 years ago (E) and I really miss the beaches there and my cousins from my mother's side. (P) When everything becomes better, we will definitely go there for a vacation.
In conclusion, the use of PREP Framework is to answer question quickly and logically.
