You know it, we love it… but what is rattan anyways? Do you know where it comes from and how furniture is made? Rattan is continuing to trend big time in 2020 and we thought you’d like to know more about this unique product that’s getting Instagram likes everywhere. Just search #rattan and you’ll see what we mean! Rattan comes from a quick growing vine found in warm tropical climates like Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia. The name rattan is actually used for over 600 different vine species in Southeast Asia. To make furniture and art, the quick growing vines are used for caning and the thicker base branch can be used as poles similar to bamboo. The skin of the plant can be kept on used for wrapping furniture, or taken off for more core elements of a piece. We love this material for it’s sustainable properties too. There’s another aspect of rattan that is a bit romantic. Knowing each piece is intricately wrapped, twisted, and bound by hand really makes us appreciate the skilled artisans that make rattan furniture and decor. We’ve attempted repairing some of our vintage pieces and I’ll tell you first hand it is not easy and definitely not for beginners! Our collection of rattan furniture inventory is filled with unique rattan pieces. Each with it’s own story and personality. Living in Philippines means this easy going and laid back island design will never go out of style. I think “swooning” is the right term to describe how our new rattan pieces make us feel.
