OBE

I first heard Outcome-Based Education (OBE) in my first semester in our subject Curriculum Development. At first, I don’t have any idea about the topic but as I read the content, I have learned that OBE is a comprehensive approach to organizing and operating an education system that is focused on and defined by the successful demonstrations of learning sought from each students.

Learning is measured by its outcome. It is important that students learn how to learn. According to Dr. Sylvia Beltran-Guevarra, OBE starts with conceptualization then output. It begins with a clear picture of what is important for students to be able to do, then clearly points the desired outcomes. Like Stephen R. Covey said that “ begin with the end in mind” which means that we must begin our lesson with a clearly defined objective.

As future educators, we teachers play a vital role on execution of the concept of OBE in terms of course designing, instructional planning, teaching and assesing students learning. This may benefit students to raise awareness of what they should learn and why they need to learn it. Teaching is teaching when the learners learn. Students are responsible for their own learning and progress. Thus, learning is a personal matter where students have the responsibility to achieve those outcomes.
