NASA's first helicopter designed to fly on Mars, Ingenuity is currently travelling to Mars aboard NASA's Mars 2020 Perseverance rover. On August 8, Ingenuity's 6 lithium-ion batteries were powered up for the first time in space. According to a statement on August 13 from NASA. "This was a big milestone, as it was our first opportunity to turn on Ingenuity and give its electronics 'test drive' since we launched on July 30". As stated by Tim Canham, "Since everything went by the book, we'll perform the same activity about every two weeks to maintain an acceptable state of charge". If the test flights go according to plan, Ingenuity will be the solid proof that robotic flight is possible on Mars, opening the entryway for broad flying exploration in the future.
