Life Lessons I learned while Working in Print Industry

Being in print industry for almost two years taught me a lot of things. As it is my first full-time job after college, I learned how to be professional, practical and most importantly, it taught me some important realizations about life.
Allow me to share the things I learned in my current work and how it changed my perspective.

We are responsible in everything we do.
Since being in a publishing company, specifically in Editorial department requires a lot of comprehension, proofreading and more proofreading, we cannot make mistakes or miss out any typo or grammatical errors, and if we do, we have to take responsibility. My colleagues and I cannot point fingers at each other because the company believes that everything you do – may it be a mistake or not – you are to blame and not others.
This lesson is applicable in real life. Once we do something, we cannot make others take the blame. If you made a mistake, don’t waste time pointing finger and just admit what you have done. Be brave to take the responsibility and learn your lesson.

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.
Back in college, I always make sure that I am always taking right path because I’m afraid to make mistakes. But when I started working full time, there were times that I always get scolded because as a fresh-grad, I am also starting to learn and discover new things and how the company works. I am always anxious in every move I make because I’m sure that one wrong move will get me scolded once more.
Later on, I realized that nobody’s perfect, so why do we have to be scared? A lot of us learned our lessons the hard way, and I believe that it’s the most effective way for us to learn and grow.
It’s okay to make mistakes because it’s also a proof that you are learning. There’s always a room for growth, and don’t be afraid to fill it in with new experiences.

Small progress is a progress.
Honestly, writing is not my thing. When my superior informed me that I have to write regularly for the newspaper, I wanted to quit immediately. I am so scared to write because it is not my comfort zone, but my superior pursued me and taught me patiently.
As days goes by, little by little, I became comfortable in writing my own thoughts. And up until today, I am able to write two to three articles per day.
Sometimes, we don’t appreciate small things because we are too focused on our big goals. But, hey, don’t forget that every step goes a long way. With constant patience and trying, you’ll achieve your dreams.
