More of the traditional Philippine Jeepneys are returning to Metro Manila roads to transport commuters beginning Wednesday, July 29, 2020.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) announced Monday that it has approved 1,943 public utility jeepneys (PUJs) to ply 17 existing routes in Metro Manila.

LTFRB first approved in early July the return of the traditional jeepney subject to the requirements of health protocols and roadworthiness.

Traditional PUJs returning to the roads are required to be currently registered roadworthy with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and with valid Personal Passenger Insurance Policy.

Operators are also required to comply with safety measures prescribed by the Inter-Agency Task for Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) before, during, and after operations, such as checking of body temperature, wearing of face mask/shield and gloves at all times, and operating at a maximum of 50% capacity.

The iconic “King of the Road” of Philippine transportation were taken off the streets in March when public transportation was suspended due to the community quarantine to stop the spread of COVID 19. Prior to the resumption of public transportation, some jeepneys were transformed into LalaJeep delivery vehicles.

The existing fare matrix of Php 9.00 for the first (4) kilometers and Php 1.50 for succeeding kilometer(s) will be followed despite the reduced passenger capacity as no fare adjustment has been approved.

The following Metro Manila routes for jeepneys as indicated in Memorandum Circular (MC) 2020-029 Annex A will be operational:

T216 Guadalupe (ABC) – Taguig via Tipas
T217 Calumpang – Cubao via P. Tuazon
T304 Ayala – Guadalupe (Ibabaw) via JP Rizal
T337 Libertad, Pasay – Pasay Rd.

No special permit is required for the jeepney to return to the roads. Instead, a corresponding QR Code is issued to the operator prior to operation, which must be printed in an 8.5” x 11” paper (short bond paper size) and displayed in the PUJ.
